What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body. It gives skin and joints their strength and elasticity. As we age, our bodies are less able maintain collagen levels. Science suggest that collagen levels may drop by as much as one to two per cent every year in post-menopausal women. In addition to normal chronological ageing, bad habits and poor lifestyle choices like smoking, alcohol consumption, a high-sugar diet and too much time in the sun may also contribute to collagen depletion1,2,3.

By eating a healthy diet rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, exercising and limiting sun exposure, we may be able to limit oxidative stress (free radical damage) that damages collagen and speeds up its loss.

What the science says about collagen

Collagen forms the framework of the dermis—the thickest layer of skin. It is when collagen levels in the dermis drop that crow’s feet, fine lines and wrinkles appear.4

Collagen in the dermis also helps to form a matrix into which other important molecules embed themselves—molecules like hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid holds onto 1000 times its weight in water, helping to keep skin plumped-up.5,6

Studies using hydrolysed type II collagen have suggested positive benefits for skin health that include supporting skin elasticity and reducing skin wrinkling.7

Collagen is found in joint cartilage and helps to cushion and protect joints against friction during everyday activities. As we age, cartilage surrounding our joints thins and may wear away entirely causing joint discomfort making us less mobile and flexible.

Collagen supplements have also shown benefits for joint support, with UC-II® undenatured collagen showing particular promise in improving joint comfort and mobility.8

How to choose the right collagen for your needs

There are many different types of collagen supplements available, but generally hydrolysed collagen is better absorbed and utilised by the body compared to other options like raw or native collagen, gelatine and bone broth.

There are a multitude of collagen products on the market, consider hydrolysed forms for best absorption or those clinically shown to support the benefit you are would like.
